Spring '01 Physics Courses

at Marlboro College

General Physics II
MWF 10:30-11:30, Sci217 (3 cr), Intro, Jim Mahoney.
The continuation of the freshman general physics course, covering electricity and magnetism, and perhaps a bit of quantum physics. The course does not require calculus, but vectors will be used throughout. The companion lab course is recommended. Prerequisite: General Physics I or the equivalent.

Acoustics
TuThu 11:30-1:00, NCS33, Sci217 (3 cr), Intro, Jim Mahoney.
The physics of sound and music. The topics and level of the course will depend on the interests and abilities of the students. Possible subjects include waves, tuning, electronic music, instrument design, room resonances, and frequency analysis.

Special Relativity
TuFri 1:30-3, Sci217 (2-3 cr), Intermediate, Jim Mahoney.
Einstein's theory of how clocks and distances change as you travel near the speed of light. This course will be offered with several variations, depending on interest: as a sophomore-level course, with some additional optics, and atomic physics, or as a junior-level course, with some additional advanced electromagnetism. Prerequiste: permission of instructor.

Quantum Mechanics II
MWF 11:30-12:30, Sci217 (3 cr), Advanced, Jim Mahoney.
Continuation of a full year, junior-level course in quantum theory.
