Fall '97

the Trail of Light
Science distrubution course using light as a theme to discuss the evolution of physics in the last few centuries. Includes Newtonian's particle theory, the classical wave theory of light, as well as quantum physics and relativity. Readings, class dicsussions, and papers are required; almost no problems assigned.

General Physics I
First term of a full-year introductory physics sequence. Newtonian Mechanics, including force, energy, momentum, and all that.

Thermodynamics
Heat, temperature, statistical mechanics, and a mix of related topics. Intermediate level.

Statistics
Fri 10am (3 cr), intro level. Algebra required
Basic notions of statistics and probability. Independent study; by permission only.

Quantum Physics I
MW 11:30-1:00 Sci201 (4 cr), advanced level. First term of a full year of quantum theory. Schrodinger's equation in 1 dimension, 3 dimensions, the hydrogen atom, and a review of basic quantum ideas.
